Protect the Commonwealth: Ask your Legislators to Close Pilgrim, on Entergy's Dime

Pilgrim Nuclear is one of the three most dangerous operating reactors in the country. This legislative session, our elected officials have opportunities to protect the Commonwealth from nuclear disaster and from the extraordinary financial costs associated with Pilgrim's inevitable closure.

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station is one of the most dangerous operating reactors in the country. The company that owns Pilgrim, Entergy Corporation, has put the Commonwealth at risk of nuclear disaster and financial damage. There are hefty costs associated with plant's inevitable closure after years of mismanagement.

That's why it's so important that you stand with Senator Wolf and support S. 1797 and S. 1798.  The decommissioning of Entergy's smaller Vermont Yankee is expected to cost $1.23 billion dollars. Currently, only $896 million is set aside. Sen. Wolf's bill S.1798 will ensure that Entergy pays an annual $25 million into the fund.

Another cost that Entergy Corporation has inflicted on the Commonwealth is the risk of a fire in Pilgrim's used fuel pools. The Attorney General has estimated that such an accident would cause up to $488 billion dollars in damages. The federal government predicts a fire in the fuel pools could displace as many as 4 million people, and make an area larger than the entire state uninhabitable for decades. Sen. Wolf's bill S.1797 places a $10k/year fee on each fuel assembly kept in one of Pilgrim's cooling pools to offset these terrible risks and the extreme costs associated with them.

It's time to close Pilgrim, and it's time to hold Entergy accountable. These are the first steps to ensuring the safest possible decommissioning and a just transition for Pilgrim's workers and surrounding communities.
